A Day in the Life of a Salty Zebra

7:29am - Wake up and attempt to claw my way to consciousness, but failed

8:26am - 0.0/20 points Wake up and take my stability score. I check this each morning and it lets me know where my body is at and how I should pace my day. A 4/5 is pretty good! It is supposed to mean that I have been pacing well lately, and I have been.

8:35 - Actually get out of bed, Use the bathroom and brush my teeth. I used to brush my teeth after breakfast in the morning, but since I've been wearing a retainer at night (the last seven years or so) I need to brush that and my teeth before I eat.

8:48 - 0.6/20 Fix coffee and breakfast then do my Bible study while I eat, or at least start it...

9:40 - 1.2/20 - Actually starting Bible study after being distracted

10:18 - 1.6/20 - Restarting my Bible study after being distracted (it's really hard to get things done with my husband around sometimes). Switched to the couch where I can sit with my back supported better now that I've finished eating.

11:08 - 1.7/20 - Finally finished my Bible study. I take my medicine and give the dogs theirs. I'm feeling a migraine coming on, but I'm questioning everything once again with whether or not to take something for it.

11:25 - 2.0/20 Shower and get ready for the day. I don't wear my tracker while I shower, not because the water would damage it, but because I don't like wearing a soggy tracker for the next few hours after. My skin is pretty sensitive and it wouldn't appreciate that either. I know I burn a lot of points with my shower, but I kind of factor that into my overall max.

12:00 - 2.6/20 Time to head to the bank to add my husband to a checking account I recently opened online for a bonus. His name needs to be on it so that his direct deposits can go in. They don't let you do this online. Turns out though, that they won't let you walk into the bank to do it either! We had to make an appointment for tomorrow and come back. We swing through Chick-Fil-A real quick for my husband to grab his free chicken sandwich reward he has. Now I don't need to fix him lunch!

12:35 I heat up some frozen soup I have for my lunch (it was delicious!) and my husband and I sit down to play a round of DC Deckbuilder, one of my favorite games. I win, but not by much, so it was a great game! Around 1:15 the pain was getting pretty serious so I took some ibuprofen hoping it would help. Spoiler alert, It didn't.

1:41 The pain has worn me out so I'm going to try to rest in bed and see if it improves things.

3:14 I was able to fall asleep earlier, which I don't always with naps, but now I've woken up in a great deal of pain. I roll onto my back to see if that will even things out.

3:47 - 3.9/20 My back has calmed down enough now to get up. I fix an apple and peanut butter snack and take some Excedrin as this is not a full-blown migraine. I started with ibuprofen because most of the time my migraines are triggered by pain and inflammation in my back, but the ibuprofen didn't do anything today. Unfortunately, neither did the Excedrin. But at least I tried!

4:10 I get to have a Facebook messenger chat with a friend of mine in Arkansas who also has Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes, and ironically a migraine. We feel each other's pain, literally. They do say misery loves company though, and it's nice to have someone who gets me.

4:45 While I'm chatting it's time to start making dinner. I set up a phone tripod so we can keep talking while I chop up veggies and prep salads and meat.

6:15 I've been up at the counter for an hour and a half which has really worn me out. I used a stool for most of it, but it's a hard wooden stool so it's not exactly ideal. I have a new saddle stool with wheels coming to use in the kitchen tomorrow. I'm so excited! I sit on the couch and rest for a bit while the meat cooks in the instant pot.

6:50 Time to finish dinner! Adding the finishing touches - caramelized garlic infused oil and barrel aged balsamic vinegar go on our caprese salads (both of these were birthday gift from my mom who bought them at a local vendor). A little cornstarch thickens the sauce on our grass-fed, grass-finished beef tips I got for next to nothing through the Door Dash (1) on one of my Credit Cards (2).

7:10 - 8.9/20 Eat dinner - it's delicious!

7:30 My job after dinner is to put away the leftovers and feed the dogs (they often get little goodies from what we ate). The guys take care of the dishes. I really appreciate them!

7:55 - 9.7/20 My pain levels are pretty high so it's time to call it a day for me. I sit on the couch with my husband and watch a couple of cooking shows. We're going through season 4 of Next Level Chef right now.

9:55 Time to start getting ready for bed. I take my meds and give the dogs theirs then I go brush my teeth.

10:05 Trying to do all I can to set myself up for a successful night's sleep, I spend 10 minutes on my whole-body vibration plate and then do a short acupressure treatment. I'm working on learning more about this and incorporating it into my routine. Once I have some solid thoughts on it, I'll share them with you.

10:20/10.6 That's it! I used just over half of my allotted energy points for the day, but I had a migraine so that decreases what I can do. Unfortunately, I've had a migraine most days lately, so this is kind of my norm.

Here's the Thing: I know this wasn't a very exciting post, but it's what my normal day looks like, and I thought that might be helpful or enlightening to someone else out there. So often we see the highlights reel of people's lives on Facebook or Instagram and think they must be out there jet-setting to fantastic destinations and doing amazing things all the time. Today I wanted to be vulnerable and share what a real, normal day looks like for me. FYI, my next day's stability score was a 3, so while I paced well the migraine knocked me down a peg anyways.
