Christ is All I Need: Created
for all things in heaven and on earth were created by him – all things, whether visible or invisible, whether thrones or dominions, whether principalities or powers – all things were created through him and for him. Colossians 1:16
Why are you here? Were you an accident? Did your parents plan for you, or were you a surprise? Are you just a random sperm and egg that came together and set a series of consequences in motion? These are questions many ask themselves these days, but I have really good news for you – you are not an accident! You were created on purpose, for a purpose. Yep, you read that right, you were created. You were created by your Creator, Jesus. That’s a pretty big thought!
You see, Jesus wasn’t
just born on the first Christmas morning, He existed before the beginning of time
and actually created time itself. He is eternal, immortal, forever. He has no
beginning and He’ll have no end. The book of John breaks it down for us in the
first chapter as well, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with
God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all
things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.” (John 1:1-3).
He made it all.
Today’s passage
breaks down creation in a way that Genesis doesn’t. In the creation account (Genesis 1-2), we
read about how Jesus made the sun, moon, stars, water, fish, birds, land,
plants, animals, and people, but there is so much more! He had to create
gravity to hold everything on the earth. He had to create seasons and time. He
had to create ideas and choice and the capacity for thought itself. He created
us physically, but He also created our souls and spirits. He created community
and relationship and hierarchy and power. EVERYTHING. He created everything.
But why?
Again, today’s
passage answers that question. It was all created FOR HIM. It was created
through Him and for Him. That’s kind of a big idea to wrap your head around.
Jesus created Satan. Jesus created Satan because Jesus knew it was best. Satan
was created for Jesus. Satan has sought to usurp and undermine and overcome
Jesus pretty much from the beginning, but he was created for Jesus.
Jesus had an ultimate plan and purpose and reason for creating Satan, and it is
good. Ok, this is a total side tangent, but it’s on my mind so you’re getting
it. In season 1 of Star Trek Strange New Worlds, there’s a back to the present episode (pretty much required in each series) where La’an Noonien-Singh and
James Kirk (from an alternate timeline) travel back to the near present to
Toronto, Canada. There, they are told that something is being changed in the
timeline which messes everything up from La’an’s and creates Kirk’s, and they
have to stop it. You see, if the event happens, it changes everything in the
future, it messes it up completely. They expect it to be some major terrorist
attack or something, and when a huge bridge blows up near them, they think
that’s it! But it turns out that was supposed to happen in both their timelines
and they keep searching. Spoiler alert, it turns out that the event that
changes the timeline is when a temporal agent attempts to kill young Khan
Noonien-Singh – La’an’s ancestor that becomes a horrible, Hitleresque world
leader that kills tens of millions of people in a horrible world war. Killing
the bad guy, when he’s still a kid, changes history and makes everything WORSE.
The earth is destroyed completely in alternate Kirk’s timeline and there is no
Federation, no good, healthy collaboration between planets and species. It’s
very Terran really (IYKYK). The point I’m getting at is, they needed the bad
guy. Earth had to have it’s Khan Noonien-Singh in order to get to its Zephraim
Cochran and StarFleet and the Federation. Just like we need
some stress in our life in order to function, we need something to fight
against, something to overcome. Ok, enough Star Trek 😂
Here’s the Thing: None of this, none of us, is an
accident. Jesus, from before the beginning of time, from before there was a
before, planned and executed creation. He has reasons for everything, and He is
the reason. It is all for Him – all of it!
