Jesus doesn't Scurryfunge!

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.”  John 14:1-3

You’re chatting with someone after church and you casually invite them over to join you for dinner. You don’t consider the ramifications, the state of your house, or what they might walk into. Really, you may not expect them to accept your invitation at all, but they do. And so you smile, wave, and say, “See you in a few!” Then you get behind the wheel of your car and drive like a bat out of hell to beat them there, so you have a few precious minutes for scurryfunging. What’s that you might ask? Scurryfunge is an old English word that means to rush around frantically cleaning or tidying a house when you realize guests are about to arrive. We’ve all done it. It’s not the ideal practice, but sometimes it happens. The hope is that your base level of clean is good enough that a quick pickup will make your house guest-ready!

So, if scurryfunging isn’t the ideal, what is? For me, that’s what the Christmas season looks like. It starts with a decorating day with my daughter where we break out the tree and all my nativities and start getting the house into a more festive mood. My husband is super conscientious about having the guest room ready for whichever of my kids might pop by. I add a few special things to my regular grocery list so we have some treats around. And then, on Christmas Day, one of the first things I do is set the table. I get out the special Christmas tablecloth, and all my Christmas dishes my Mom gave me when we were first married. I pull out the placemats and napkins my dear friends from India brought for me. I set up the special glasses, the ones that only get used for family dinners. The table is ready, and so am I. It helps me feel like I am welcoming my family home, making them feel special and loved.

This is what I picture Jesus doing in Heaven. He doesn’t say He’s going to make or design or build a place for us, He says He’s preparing it. He’s getting it ready. He’s putting on all the finishing touches, personalizing things, and making it all just right. Why is He doing that? Because He loves us. He loves us so very, very much.

Here’s the Thing: I don’t know about you, but I very much want to be with someone who loves me like that. I want to see and experience all that He’s prepared for me. I am so looking forward to Heaven and being with my precious Savior!
