RE:  Mission Update

Good Morning Spy Team Leader!  I hope that your time with Grandma Sheila is going well.  I have continued my communication with the local geckos.  I thought you might be impressed to see their camouflage capabilities.  This was a gecko that Mom found in the bathroom this morning.  It had changed color to match the night light it was sitting on. Pretty impressive, eh?

Today, Mom and Dad cleaned up the house and packed their things to move to the next place they will be staying. I thought you would like to see some pictures of both places.  The first pictures are of their house for the first week on Kauai…

This is the front of the house

AS you enter, to the left is the living room:

Then the dining room

Then the kitchen

In the back there was a guest bedroom and a bathroom.  This bathroom had a cool shower that looked out back.  Don’t worry, there were no neighbors out there to see, but it felt like you were showering outside – kinda cool J

This is the view out of the shower to the back.

All of the doors on the back side of the house open to the lanai – what we would call a porch:

From the front door if you went right, there was a little sitting room:

And then our bedroom:

And bathroom:

The house was up on stilts and under it was an outdoor shower to clean up when you come back from the beach.  We should hook one of these up at the beach house in Ocean Shores!

Behind the house, this stream was flowing

And there was a small yard with fruit trees

Behind the yard, was a pasture full of goats.

And here I am saying, “Aloha!” to my coconut buddy at our first house!

Mom and Dad drove around and shopped this afternoon.  Dad got this cool picture of the Hanalei valley:

All over the North Shore they have these tricky one lane bridges.  When you come up to one, you have to slow down and see if anyone else is on it.  Then you wait and take your turn, hoping not to get stuck!

We had fun shopping at Ching Young Village!

Well, this email’s getting pretty long, so I’ll sign off now and send you pictures of their new house tomorrow!

Be sure to let me know if I can ask the geckos to join your spyteam!

RE:  Mission Update

Yesterday was interesting.  The weather report said that it would get up to 83 degrees, which was about seven degrees higher than the day before so they dressed lightly.  In reality it only just popped above 70 and it rained off and on so they got pretty cold!  That’s a lesson they had to learn and today I think they will dress in layers!

In the morning, after breakfast, we headed along the east coast to look at some waterfalls.  The first ones we visited were ‘Opeka’a Falls.  From the lookout you could see a beautiful view of the falls, the mountains, and the valley – all of course clothed in every shade of green imaginable.

On the other side of the lookout, you could see the Wailua River.  This river was sacred to the ancient Hawaiian People.  Their Chief and his family would live in a special area set apart and fed by this river, making the soil rich and fertile.

Next, we travelled to Wailua Falls, at the top of this river.  From the lookout, you could see these amazingly beautiful falls, but that was not enough for Dad, he had to see them close up J

There were two trails from the lookout – both of them marked “Danger”  “Keep Out!”  At my insistence, Mom listened to the signs and stayed in the jeep reading while your Father ventured out to explore.  I went with him, of course, because someone has to keep an eye on that crazy guy!  The things I do for my job!

He headed to the trail the led to the top of the falls first.  Part way down, we noticed a girl in a bikini clinging to the edge of a cliff and a man who was just sitting there taking pictures of her and not helping at all!  Your dad, being the hero he is, jumped right in to save her.  He helped her out of the bad spot that the man had tricked her into and down to the top of the waterfalls where she perched on the very edge and did a number of amazing yoga poses.  Turns out she was there from New York to do a photo shoot for her yoga company.  Her photographer had wisely stayed at the overlook and shot photos from there.  Here are a couple Dad took of her though.

And here’s one of me on the edge of the waterfall!

After helping the poor stranded bikini babe back to the overlook where she met up with her photographer, Dad and I headed down a steep and dangerous path to the base of the falls.  Dad went off in the wrong direction at one point, but fortunately for him a little girl pointed out his folly and set him back on the right path.  The view from the bottom of the falls was amazing and totally worth the climb down, but not necessarily the climb back up!

On the way back up, I met another creature you should consider for your spy team.  Dad and I didn’t even see him until we had to take a break because we were so out of breath from climbing.  His camouflage skills are amazing!  He even pretended to be a rock while we were taking pictures of him – Dad could only tell that he was still alive because we could see him breathing.

Then we were on our way back up!

Next we stopped at a restaurant for some local food called Saimin.  It is basically fancy Top Ramen with extra meat and veggies on top.  Pretty huh?

After lunch, we went down to Lydgate Beach Park.  They had a couple of really cool playgrounds that you guys would love with all kinds of climbing stuff in them.  Mom and Dad were only interested in the beach though L.  At this park there is a man-made cove with rocks surrounding it so that the waves don’t come in so strong making it safe to swim.  There is coral here and lots of fish and crabs and stuff so you can snorkel.  The only problem is that it was SO COLD!!!  Mom laid on the beach in the sun and Dad explored the cove by climbing on the rocks around it – not by getting in the water.  They didn’t stick around long because the wind chilled them to the bone in their light clothing.

They went back to the rental house after the beach and sat in the warm tub (it wasn’t hot yet) and then put on some warmer clothes and waited for your call.  After talking to you guys, we headed out for dinner.  Can you believe it, Dad talked Mom into letting him have ice cream for dinner!  I had to have Mom take this picture for proof!

Glad to hear you guys had so much fun with your family at the Golden Corral yesterday.  Hope that today is nice and restful for you.

Be sure to be nice to Grandma!  I think she’s getting worn out by all of you guys’ energy!
