The Horn of Our Salvation

“For he has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David,”  Luke 1:69

Jesus is the Horn of our Salvation. That’s kind of a funny thing to say, but what does it mean?

According to What is the horn of salvation? | GotQuestions.org, referring to Jesus as the horn of salvation paints many pictures. First, the horn is a, “literary symbol representing potency and power.” On bulls and rams, the horns were their protection. They would use them both to defend and attack. They were formidable tools that both animals and people learned to respect. Referring to Jesus as our “horn” describes Him as our protector, our defender, one who will stand up for us against the forces of evil. In Him we are never alone!

In Old Testament times, horns were used both as a receptacle for oil and as a trumpet of sorts. Being anointed with oil was a symbol of being chosen or set apart for a purpose. Kings were anointed in this way. I see Jesus as our horn of salvation in this way as well ad He has chosen us and set us apart for a purpose. As a trumpet like horn, there could be lots of different references. One that stood out to me was Isaiah 27:13 in the CSB where it says, “On that day a great ram's horn will be blown, and those lost in the land of Assyria will come, as well as those dispersed in the land of Egypt; and they will worship the LORD at Jerusalem on the holy mountain.” This is talking about the announcement of the second coming of Christ to heal the world and bring us home. When Jesus walked the earth 2,000 years ago, He announced many things about His return, telling us that He was going to prepare a place for us and would come back for us. I could see Jesus acting as a horn in this way as well.

Finally, Got Questions also talks about the horns on the altar. These were where the blood would be sprinkled and were used as a place of refuge and sanctuary for a fugitive. In this way as well, Jesus is our horn. It is to Him we must run for refuge as He is our only hope of forgiveness and rescue.

Here’s the Thing: The Bible often uses colorful language to paint pictures for us that have deeper meanings than simple words can convey. When we read about the horn of salvation, we can learn so much about Jesus!
