But Wait! There's One More!

The Lord is not slow concerning his promise, as some regard slowness, but is being patient toward you because he does not wish for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.  2 Peter 3: 9

We are an instant gratification society. As soon as we hear about something we want it, and we want it now. The average credit card debt per person in the US is $7,951 as of 2022. If you double that for the two adult household, that number is more like $15, 902 per family. That number was up about $1,000 per person from 2021. It seems that as the world opened up after Covid, people felt the need to get out and vacation in ways they couldn’t before, whether they could afford it or not. With an average interest rate of 14.39%, America is enslaved to debt. Debt is not what I’m writing about here though, that’s a sidebar. What I’m getting at is, we’re not good at waiting. The idea of saving up for something we’d like in the future is pretty foreign to us.

So then we come to a saving knowledge of Jesus. We make Him Lord of our lives. He becomes our best friend. Of course we are looking forward to the day that He returns! In fact, could it be today please? We can’t imagine putting it off indefinitely. But if we’d slow down a minute, we’d realize that He waited 2,000 years for us. He could have staged the triumphal return with the sky peeled back and the trumpets blaring a thousand years ago when we weren’t even a twinkle in our great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandaddy’s eyes. Yes, I counted those, there are 33 greats there, averaging 30 years for a generation for 1,000 years. I’m a nerd. But the thing is, Jesus didn’t do it 1,000 years ago, He waited for us. He saw us on the horizon of the future and loved us so much that He said, “That’s worth waiting for.” We can’t even wait for the next iPhone.

If Jesus thought we were worth waiting for, it seems there’s someone else worth waiting for too, or He’d be here by now. Is there someone you love that isn’t walking with Jesus yet? Would you like Him to wait for them too? I mentioned a friend that posts songs a little while back and a few days ago she posted the song Come Jesus Come by CeCe Winans. I’ll admit, I was caught up in the lyrics and drawn to the idea of wanting Jesus to come, right now. But then there was a pause in my spirit as the faces of some people I dearly love who are not walking with God came to mind.

Here's the Thing: As much as I desperately want to be with my Savior, I can be patient a little longer as I wait for Him to draw those I love to Himself as well.
